WHAT ARE WE DOING ON A GOLDEN RESCUE WEBSITE?
It’s a fair question. After all, we’re not Goldens. We’re not even Golden mixes. We don’t even have a distant Golden cousin that we know of. We’re Potcakes…the affectionate Caribbean name for mixed-breed island dogs. We are from Barbados and while we may not have flowing golden locks, we do have something else in common with every dog Golden Rescue helps: we all deserve a second chance.
A kind Canadian living in Barbados couldn’t look away when she saw us in desperate need. She rescued us, got us healthy, vaccinated, spayed and neutered, and ready for a brighter future. Now, she’s hoping to find us homes in Canada because, quite simply, our future in Barbados is bleak. We all have different stories, but they started the same way: abandoned, unwanted, and left to fend for ourselves. The good news? Those days are behind us.
Today we’re healthy, fully vetted, learning our manners, and discovering that life is pretty great when humans are kind. We’re affectionate, social, food-motivated, and eager to learn. We enjoy other dogs, respect cats, and would love families willing to continue helping us become the best dogs we can be. We’re looking for people willing to give an island dog a chance.

Milva #5178 ~ The Confident One
Hi, I’m Milva. I’m 8 months old and 31 pounds of what my foster calls ‘main-character energy’. I’m loving, confident, and full of personality, but once I’m inside the house, I’m surprisingly calm. My favourite activities include naps, snuggles, and supervising household events from the most comfortable bed available. I like other dogs, although I sometimes need a little time to decide I’m the boss before becoming their best friend. I’m smart, trainable, and eager to please, and I promise to keep you smiling every day.

Thomas #5180 ~ The Little Survivor
My name is Thomas. I’m 1-2 years old and currently weigh about 20 pounds but I will get bigger. My story is the hardest. I was found near a dump, severely underweight and wearing a belt and wire around my neck. Despite everything I’ve been through, I still believe people are worth trusting. I’m a tiny velcro boy who wants nothing more than to be close to my humans. I’m still learning that food will always be there and that good things don’t disappear overnight, but I’m making remarkable progress every day. My past may be sad, but I’m much more interested in my future.

Maybe we’re not Goldens. But we think we’d fit right in.
