Hi everyone! My name is Balou, and yes, I share my name with that famous bear from The Jungle Book. While I may not sing The Bare Necessities, I do believe life should include plenty of walks, treats, toys, belly rubs, and lounging around with my people. I’m a handsome 3-year-old with a big heart, a playful spirit, and just enough quirks to keep life interesting. Let’s start with the good stuff. I absolutely love people. If you’re gardening, relaxing on the deck, watching TV or working around the house, I’ll happily supervise your activities. I enjoy making sure nobody feels lonely. I’m also a social boy who gets along well with other dogs. I’m pretty smart too. My foster dad gave me an impressive 8.5 out of 10 for obedience. I have a soft mouth when taking treats and a keen eye for opportunity. In fact, if you ever catch me staring intently at the toy box or cookie cupboard, I’m simply trying to manifest something wonderful. I love my walks, car rides, games of tug-of-war, and having room to stretch my legs. A secure yard would be a dream come true, but as long as I get my daily exercise, I can be happy in many living situations. Now for the not-so-good (which really isn’t bad at all). Sometimes I can be a little sensitive and skittish if I’m startled. For example, if I encounter a dog that seems intimidating, I might decide that discretion is the better part of valor and politely move away. I am learning to not guard my food so you need to be a strong leader to continue my training. Oh, I can become completely absorbed in sniffing. My nose often seems to have its own agenda and once it discovers an interesting scent, the rest of the world may temporarily cease to exist (the main reason for my needing a secure yard). I also have a sensitive tummy and some environmental sensitivities, so my veterinary team has got me on a special diet and an allergy management program. My ideal home would be with people who are home more often than not who understand that confidence can take time to build. Give me patience, consistency, and lots of love, and I’ll reward you with loyalty, companionship, and plenty of Golden smiles. So, if you’re looking for a fun-loving sidekick who enjoys both adventure and afternoon naps, I might just be your Balou. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I think I saw the toy box looking lonely…
